stressed_out_kid_doing_homeworkDoes it feel like your child is bringing home more and more homework? Is it creating stress for your child? Maybe even stress for you?

Every week, I hear kids complaining about the amount of homework they have. As they tell me how much it stresses them with trying to fit in in amongst all their activities, I notice how they are slumped in their chair, usually looking down at the floor. They look exhausted and they haven’t even started.

When they tell me about things that they love to do, I see them sitting up straighter. I see the brightness in their eyes. I feel the energy they have.

So, this makes me wonder, is homework beneficial? How much homework should kids be doing? Is homework worth the stress it causes? What does the research say about it?

As I pondered these questions, I received an email about a talk at the U of C called “Homework Myth – Why our kids get too much of a bad thing”, by Alfie Kohn on Thursday, May 10th. I have heard him speak a couple times before and I found that he shared some pretty interested insight.

I will be attending his talk. Hope to see you there!!
